Fukuoka
Fukuoka has the largest economy in the Kyushu area. It is a major transportation hub and has land access to and from the mainland through the Shinkansen, with many air routes as well from Tokyo and Osaka. It is also just three hours away from Korea by high-speed boat. Fukuoka was once bustling with Japan’s first contemporary steel factory, the Yahata Steel Works, as well as the Chikuho Coalfield and the Miike Coal Mine. They have all closed down now, becoming valuable industrial sites that show us the development of contemporary Japanese history. Currently thriving industries are iron and steel manufacturing, as well as automobile-related production. Its agriculture is known for the Amao brand strawberries due to its warm climate. Fukuoka takes pride in being one of Japan’s largest producers of bluefin tuna and pufferfish, and holds one of the largest domestic market shares in seaweed farming. Hakata dolls, its traditional craft, are also popular works of art.

Kagoshima
Located at the southern end of Kyushu, Kagoshima consists of over 20 islands and the mainland bordered by other prefectures. It is active in agriculture and remains an avid producer of sweet potatoes to this day. Sweet potatoes are known as satsuma imo, which comes from Kagoshima’s name during the early modern period, Satsuma, and the Japanese word for potatoes, imo. Kagoshima also grows tea, sugar canes, pumpkins, and peas, and is also known for livestock farming, garnering popularity for its high-end meat such as black pork and Kagoshima black beef. It is also dotted with unique hot springs, including the steam sand bath in which you are buried in the sand to keep warm. It is also known for Yakushima, an island with ancient forests listed as a world heritage site, as well as Tanegashima, another island with the largest rocket launching site in Japan. Kagoshima’s traditional craft, Oshima weave, is woven silk with 1,300 years of history. It is held in high regard and is considered the most luxurious textile in Japan.

Kumamoto
Kumamoto’s mascot, Kumamon, is popular throughout Japan. Kumamoto is surrounded by mountains on three sides—one of them is a caldera called Mt. Aso. It is generally warm, except in the inlands where temperatures vary largely and heavy rainfall occurs occasionally. The soft rushes used for making tatami mats are mostly from Kumamoto. Watermelon, tomato, eggplant, ginger, and melon farming is active in Kumamoto, and technological advancements are now being in order to export the produce. Western Kumamoto is adjacent to the bays connecting to the East China Sea. Shad and shellfish are fished in the shallow Ariake Sea, and yellowtail and sea bream are farmed in the Yatsushiro Sea to the south. Its manufacturing industry is similar to the rest of Kyushu, making it home to semiconductor and automobile-related companies. The logistics industry is also gathering with the development of the highway network.

Miyazaki
Miyazaki is bordered by the Kyushu Mountains to the west and the sea to the east. It is warm throughout the year, with long hours of sunlight and the tropical beauty of the Nichinan Coast stretching from the center to the south making it a popular sightseeing destination. Its warm weather is fit for vegetable and fruit cultivation, which mostly revolves around cucumbers, green bell peppers, mangos, and the Miyazaki-sourced citrus fruit called hyuganatsu. Miyazaki is a prominent producer of livestock including cattle, pigs, and chicken, and Miyazaki beef has come out on top four times as of 2017 at the National Japanese Beef Ability Expo, which is held every five years. It is also active in fishery and forestry, marked by a large production of cedar wood as well as skipjack tuna caught using pole-and-line fishing. Wood from its dense forests is also used in traditional crafts. A famous example is Miyazaki rokuro, which is carved wooden tableware.

Nagasaki
Nagasaki has an active marine industry due to the long coastline created by isolated islands and small peninsulas and it had the largest production of Japanese horse mackerel, Pacific bluefin tuna, red sea bream, and horned turban in 2013. It adopted foreign cultures despite the Japanese isolation policy during the early modern period thanks to Dejima, an island in the area and the only place foreigners were allowed to enter. This gave birth to Western-style foods, such as a Japanese sponge cake called castella. Manufacturing work is conducted in Sasebo, which is known as the shipbuilder’s town. Nagasaki is also blessed with varied landforms and nature, which helps promote diverse kinds of produce, in particular loquats, potatoes, strawberries, and beef cattle. Tortoiseshell work made of imported raw materials is a symbolic traditional craft of Nagasaki.

True to its slogan as the prefecture of hot springs, Oita has many hot spring resorts. Saga
Saga is in northwestern Kyushu and is only about 200 kilometers away from the Korean Peninsula. The Yoshinogari Ruins from the Yayoi period (10th century B.C. - 3rd century A.D.) display continental influence through intricate ornaments and rice culture. Saga’s specialties include the world-renowned ancient crafts of Arita and Imari ware, establishing Saga’s status as a major Japanese ceramics producer to this day. To the southeast, it is adjacent to an inland sea called the Ariake Sea. The sea has a mixture of fresh and salt water and a large tidal range, creating a great environment for farming seaweed and making Saga a prominent producer of seaweed. The Ariake Sea’s mudflats are known as a habitat for plovers and sandpipers and were registered as a Ramsar site in 2015.

Okinawa
