Industrial Tourism in Hokkaido

Hokkaido

map

Hokkaido accounts for 20% of the total area of Japan and has been taking advantage of its cool climate to produce potatoes, onions, pumpkins, and dairy ever since agriculture became active in the 1870s. As the top producer of crab and sea urchin in Japan, it is also known for its seafood. Due to these characteristics, Hokkaido is recognized as having a rich and varied diet among the Japanese. Its location as the northernmost point of Japan also makes it a popular snow resort destination. The Ainu are an indigenous people who have been living in Hokkaido since the 17th century. They have a unique culture and are known for their beautifully patterned fabrics and traditional woodcraft. Hokkaido is also blessed with forests, and Asahikawa is an active production ground for furniture and wooden products.
