mui board
“mui board” is a wooden touch panel that serves as a smart home control hub. Designed as a distraction-free “calm design” interface for the post-smart screen era, mui enables users to focus on their tasks at hand and be in the moment while staying digitally “connected.”mui is inspired by the Taoism philosophy of “mui shizen” which we believe to conceptualize the harmony among humans, the nature surrounding us and technology that we have developed. mui emphasizes the moments of feeling joy and comfort in our daily life under the concept of “Calm Technology & Design”. Through our product, we would like you to have different experiences from the existing digital devices which may be able to fulfill your unmet needs through sharing moments and memories with your loved ones and through touching nature. Our product does not force you to change your natural behavior, but rather calmly and elegantly sit as if one of your furniture and notify you important information and encourage more communications with your family members.

Hashira no Kioku (Height Marking in Wood)
Developed collaboratively by mui Lab and Wacom Co., the world’s leading provider of pen tablets, “Hashira no Kioku (Height Marking in Wood)” enables families to digitally continue enjoying the universal family practice of marking their children’s height measurements on the wall, using mui’s uniquely design wooden pillar and Wacom’s digital pen. The pillar is impregnated with the mui technology that turns a wood surface into a touch- sensitive display panel. The system automatically stores the measurement with a time stamp. Then, from time to time, it displays a beautiful poem about a child’s growth on a wooden storage box in the room – which is connected to the system via the cloud – to bring back the beautiful family memory and wonderful feeling associated with it. By using the pen to manipulate an image of a clock that appears on the box, one can also retrieve measurements and message entries from specific dates in the past. “Hashira no Kioku (Height Marking in Wood)” represents a brand-new application of mui, a ‘calm’ interface technology designed to keep a device outside of the user’s consciousness while fulfilling its purpose,” said mui Lab CEO Kaz Oki. “The Hashira system takes data, deciphers a wonderful human experience, and the emotions behind it, and translates that into a work of art that highlights the beauty of family life. It aims to enrich the user’s memories of each user’s memories of their most precious moments.”
